Kenya willing to help Haiti to get out of the crisis

The terrible situation in Haiti is not leaving people indifferent, especially in Africa. After years of chaos that brought to the murder of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Haiti is now undermined by turf wars, and political instability prevails.

The daily violence that is suffered by the locals has urged more than 700 000 people to leave their house in order to find a shelter somewhere else in the country. According to the United Nations, 3 661 people have been killed in Haiti since January 2024. The figures are not far from horror, and armed groups are ruling and making no distinction in the killing. Today, 80% of the capital city Port-au-Prince is controlled by those groups, who also hold the main axes of the country.

In reaction to such an appalling situation, Kenyan president William Ruto asserted that 600 more policemen would soon be deployed in Haiti. He said that on October 11 during a visit of Haiti’s Prime Minister in Kenya. The international mission is supposed to strengthen safety in Haiti for the people, but the lack of logistic and financial support is glaring.

This summer, Kenya began to deploy their policemen in Haiti. At the moment, about 400 Kenyan policemen have landed in Haiti, before the arrival of 600 more policemen in a period of time that was not clarified by the Kenyan president. William Ruto also asked the international community to bring support to this mission as soon as possible.

In last September, the UN Security Council extended the police multinational mission in Haiti. The mission will last one more year, but the country is still hit by extreme violence with no proper solution found to efficiently help the civilians and people living there. Kenya proposed to help, but more countries are expected to help if Haiti wants to get back to something that looks like peace and stability.
