Imane Ayissi Weaves Tradition into Modern Couture at PFW

Luxury fashion house Imane Ayissi, an African-inspired French couture brand, is no stranger to
the runways of Fashion Week. Its latest collection, Mssam Assou, marks another milestone in
the 20-year career of Imane Ayissi—the first Sub-Saharan designer to show at Paris Haute
Couture Week.
For SS25, Ayissi’s haute couture collection showcased at PFW blends expert tailoring, draping,
and bold details with influences drawn from his Cameroonian heritage. Classic couture
silhouettes are reimagined with vibrant raffia fringe, traditional African patterns, and woven
fabrics that bring a distinctive, artisanal touch to French couture. A black silk cowl-neck blouse is
paired with an artisanal skirt, while orange, flower-shaped raffia bursts from a mini dress.
Tapered pink taffeta pants are complemented by a calf-length kente fabric coat in black, rust,
and rose. This intimate collection of statement pieces seamlessly melds traditional African
artistry with modern sophistication, demonstrating Ayissi’s mastery of both worlds.
Delicate floral appliqués form a striking gown that feels utterly contemporary, while
1960s-inspired, Hepburn-esque dresses add a nostalgic charm. Oversized statement jewelry
and opera gloves enhance the old-world glamour, a nod to the timeless elegance his mother—a
former Miss Cameroon—would undoubtedly admire. Perhaps most striking is Ayissi’s signature
use of cascading, colorful raffia in capes, dresses, and jackets, creating movement and volume
as models glide down the runway. The emphasis on fluidity and freedom in his designs reflects
Ayissi’s background in ballet, a discipline he pursued before dedicating himself to fashion. “A
body that is free, that expresses the movement of life—working with that, there is no limit to
inspiration,” he told Forbes in a recent interview.
As with Ayissi’s previous collections, Mssam Assou is a celebration of hand-crafted garments,
rich in intentionality and steeped in African textile traditions. It is a powerful statement on
identity—an ode to knowing who you are and where you come from in a world so often driven
by conformity.
