Bismack Biyombo about to stay in Texas

Unless last minute surprise, Congolese center Bismack Biyombo should play the next NBA season with the San Antonio Spurs. The 33-year-old player signed a one-year contract with the Texas franchise and five times NBA champions (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014). This contract is not guaranteed.

The expected signature of Biyombo with the Spurs does not come out of nowhere. During the last NBA season that witnessed the coronation of Oklahoma City Thunder (former franchise of Biyombo), the Lubumbashi native joined San Antonio in February 2025 after Victor Wembanyama’s injury. He played 28 games between February and April 2025, 26 ones in the starting lineup, for an average of 5,1 points and 5,6 rebounds in 18,9 minutes per game.

It seems that the Spurs appreciated his job, since they proposed him a not guaranteed contract for the upcoming season. An invitation to the training camp before making a choice that could possibly give Biyombo the fifteenth and last contract in the squad.

With players like Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes, De’Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are combining talented youth players and precious experience. The potential addition of Bismack Biyombo could benefit the whole squad. The Congolese center knows the NBA very well. He never grabbed the Larry O’Brien trophy, but he played about 15 years in NBA in many different franchises (Charlotte, Toronto, Orlando, Phoenix, Memphis, OKC).

Committed in a bunch of projects in DR Congo (education, health, sports), Bismack Biyombo must be following the recent news with a lot of attention. A peace agreement was signed between DR Congo and Rwanda in June 2025, before a ceasefire agreement was found with armed group M23 in July 2025. Everyone is hoping for a durable peace in Eastern Congo, a region that has been hit by war and conflicts for 20 years.
