Couture and Culture: Cannes 2025 Brings a Bold, Global Glamour

The Cannes Film Festival red carpet never disappoints with its fashion moments, and this year was no exception. Despite a last-minute dress code banning long trains and sheer, immodest style choices, the style world rose to the challenge, delivering one more hit of high glamour before summer officially begins.

Angela Bassett turned heads in a peachy, pearl-embroidered suit by Syrian designer Yara Shoemaker. She paired the look with a long layered necklace and silver metallic platforms, striking the perfect balance of breezy and luxe. Yara Shoemaker, known for her artistry and craftsmanship, empowers standout women and female leaders through thoughtful, elevated design. Other Cannes attendees who wore the label included Heidi Klum and Shanina Shaik.

Actress Sophie Tankou and content creator Sylvanie Bessong also made a powerful impression in custom gowns designed by Francel Guezodje, Head Couturier at iconic fabric house Vlisco’s atelier in Cotonou, Benin. Sylvanie wore a Satin Royal dress that was romantic and fluid, with airy movement, adorned with Swarovski crystals. Sophie stunned in a look crafted from Vlisco’s Grand SuperWax, a structured, crisp fabric with a subtle sparkle finish, also embellished with crystals.

This collaboration, initiated by Vlisco, offered the young talents a truly rare experience, highlighting their creativity while celebrating African culture—a central part of the brand’s mission.

Another standout moment came from supermodel Coco Rocha, who wore a sculptural design by breakout talent Ionut Razvan. The gown, made from four stacked collared shirts, transformed a classic button-up into a dramatic, form-fitting dress with a trumpet hem. The look channeled this year’s tailored Met Gala theme while remaining distinctly chic on the Cannes carpet.

“By deconstructing the classic suit, a symbol that transcends eras, I brought something old into the present, a memory dressed for the next life,” Razvan said of the concept behind the collection.
