How do you handle management and working as part of a team ?

If you are working in a company as a salaryman, you probably have to follow the rules and instructions of a manager. Perhaps you are part of a big team too. Working in a firm and abiding by the law of one’s hierarchy is a concept that is not always easy to cope with, especially if you value independence and freedom. How do you handle your daily job in such an environment?

Everyone does not feel comfortable with the concept of management. In the business world, it is quite normal to manage/be managed with objectives to achieve, reporting to do and orders to follow. In today’s world, the economic and financial results of an entity tend to prevail, and the working conditions of the people sometimes struggle with the necessity to make money.

In such a context, the management issue has to be taken into great consideration. Beyond the need to “make the figures”, the company must also respect and treat well the men and women that contribute to the benefits of the structure. It is also a matter of mental health, and management is narrowly related to the subject. A manager supervises human beings, not robots. Every single person is different, and a manager must use emotional intelligence to make his/her team feel good enough to give the best they can and preserve their physical and mental health.

On the paper, this can look simple and easy to get. In reality, things are much complicated to handle. Everyone knows a relative that complains about his/her boss for being rude, too demanding or lacking empathy. The way a manager behaves will directly influence the productivity of the team. The words that will be used, the way the speech will be said, the level of tolerance, the autonomy given to one’s team, the boundaries that will be fixed, any single thing has to be taken seriously to ensure everyone feels good at work and does the job at the same time.
