For years, the beauty industry told a very simple story: sunscreen is for pale skin. If you were Black, brown, or melanin-rich, you probably heard some version of “you do not burn” or “you do not need it.”
We need to retire that myth.
Melanin does offer some natural protection. It is estimated to give the equivalent of SPF 13. That is not nothing, but it is also not enough. The sun does not check your skin tone before it causes hyperpigmentation, premature aging, or skin cancer. And yes, Black people get skin cancer too. The difference is that it is often diagnosed later, and the outcomes are worse.
What the sun is actually doing to all skin
1. Hyperpigmentation: Those dark spots and melasma that take months to fade? UV exposure makes them worse. For deeper skin tones, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is already a concern. Skipping SPF makes it a long-term problem.
2. Aging: Up to 80% of visible facial aging is caused by the sun. Loss of elasticity, fine lines, uneven texture. Melanin slows it, but it does not stop it.
3. Skin cancer: Acral lentiginous melanoma, the type that appears on palms, soles, and under nails, disproportionately affects people of color and has nothing to do with sunburn. Daily SPF and dermatology checks still matter.
4. Uneven tone: That “glow” you want? The sun breaks down collagen and creates blotchiness. SPF is your first step to even skin.
The real issue for years was not that we did not need sunscreen. It is that most formulas were not made for us. Chalky, grey, sticky. Nobody wants to walk around looking ashy.
That has changed. The new generation of SPF is weightless, invisible, and designed with melanin in mind. Here are 4 brands doing it right:
4 SPFs Worth Adding to Your Routine

1. Enudium SPF 50

A French-pharmacy meets inclusive-beauty approach. Enudium’s fluid is completely invisible on skin and doubles as a primer. No white cast, no pilling under makeup. Formulated with niacinamide to help with tone, it is ideal if you are already treating dark spots. For the woman who wants her SPF to feel like skincare, not a chore.
2. Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30

The brand that started the conversation. BGS is a moisturizing, sheer formula that was created specifically for women of color. Infused with jojoba and avocado, it melts in with zero residue. It smells like a vacation and works under foundation. This is the one you keep in your tote bag.
3. Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor SPF 30

Rihanna understood the assignment: SPF that is refillable, pink-free, and makeup friendly. Hydra Vizor is lightweight, helps reduce the look of pores, and plays well with other products. If you want one step that hydrates and protects, this is it. Plus, it was tested on all skin tones before it ever hit shelves.
4. Bolden SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer

Built for melanin-rich skin from day one. Bolden’s SPF combines broad-spectrum protection with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, so it actively works on brightness while it shields. The finish is dewy but never greasy, and it leaves no cast on deep skin. Best for normal to dry skin types who want glow without the grease.
How to use it so you actually wear it
- Make it the last step of your skincare, before makeup.
- Use two fingers worth for your face and neck. Most of us under-apply.
- Reapply if you are outside. A mist or SPF stick over makeup makes it easy.
- 365 days a year. UV rays come through clouds. They come through windows. Your skin is in Paris, Dakar, or New York. It still needs SPF.
Sunscreen is not a “white skin” product. It is a skin product. If you care about glow, even tone, and long-term skin health, SPF is non-negotiable. The beauty industry finally caught up and made formulas we actually want to use.
Your melanin is powerful, but it is not a shield. Protect it.
